How I Saved Over $5,000

In June I am going to Ireland.  A friend, Betty,  is a tour guide for a company called Smartours.  She will be leading the 13 day tour.  I had the option of purchasing the tour as a land only tour or pay a higher price which included airfare from New York.  I opted for the land only figuring I could use some frequent flyer miles to get me to Ireland.

A few years ago I got a British Airways credit card.  The card came with 100,000 British Airways miles.  I figured now was the time to cash in those miles.  Unfortunately, British Airways charges some high fees on their tickets but I figured I would take my chances.

I was able to get a first class ticket where the fees were only $450.  The ticket, if not bought with award miles, would have sold for $5876.

Here is what I am looking forward to:

e-Miles Helps My Military Friends

Yesterday I discussed what e-Miles was and how you can airline and/or hotel points, even an Amazon gift card.  I have friends in the military so this blog is for them.  Through the e-Miles website Turbotax is offering both a FREE federal and state tax program for those of the rank E-5 and below.  It is not hard to find different tax programs, including Turbo Tax, that offer a FREE federal program but getting a FREE state program is a real bonus.  Click here to tax advantage of this offer.  This is a great way to earn 50 miles through E-Miles.

If you are above the rank of E-5 TurboTax still has a deal for you:

In addition, TurboTax has a Mission2Match any donations for Operation Homefront. TurboTax will donate one dollar for every one dollar you donate, up to one million dollars.  This program helps provide emergency financial aid and assistance to U.S. military families and wounded warriors. Together, the donations will make a real difference to those facing the greatest financial hardship, including:

  • Personnel who served in Iraq or Afghanistan
  • Wounded veterans
  • Enlisted ranks E-1 to E-5

What is E-miles?

E-Miles is an on-line program that rewards you for your time by giving you airline miles, hotel points or an Amazon gift card.  Simply by reading or watching ads and responding to marketing messages, based on your preferences, you will earn points/miles. Unfortunately, you don't earn a lot of miles each time you respond and it takes a while to earn 500 points, which is the minimum to transfer to an airline.  I don't respond to these emails often but when I am at the car wash or in the waiting room for a doctor's appointment it is a quick way to try and keep my airline miles alive.

Concierge Service

Who doesn't like being treated special?  You may already have your own concierge service and not even know it.  That's what happened to me.  I was flying to the Los Angeles area on Alaska Airlines when the flight attendant, Nancy, made an announcement trying to get people to sign up for the Alaska Airlines credit card. She mentioned most of the benefits, including receiving an annual companion ticket for a fare of $110 (This is a great deal when flying to Hawaii).  Since I already had the Alaska Airlines credit card I told Nancy I didn't need an application.  Nancy then asked me if I had used the concierge service before.  I think it was the puzzled look on my face that made her continue explaining.  Nancy said there is a concierge number on the back of my credit card and if I call it the next time I am traveling I would be sent 2 for 1 coupons to be used in the area where I was traveling.

The concierge service is operated 24/7.  In addition to 2 for 1 coupons, the concierge service also provides:
  • Restaurant recommendations and reservations
  • Travel arrangements
  • Entertainment planning, including ticketing
  • Business related assistance such as conference and hospitality services
  • And much more.
The Alaska Airlines credit card is not the only credit card to provide concierge service so check the back of the credit card(s) you have and see what benefits you might be missing out on.

Have a Great Weekend!!

Thinking of Switching from American to Alaska Miles Earning

It is January and I am working on my airline status strategy for the 2013 year.  On the Global Scavenger Hunt (see January 14th, 2013 blog) the flights are not on any U.S. airlines but that doesn't mean I can't earn my favorite airline miles based on an alliance (See July 3, 2013 blog to understand alliances).

I currently have platinum status with American Airlines which gives me lots of benefits but I am thinking of switching to earn Alaska Airline miles for status this year.  With Alaska Airlines, seventy-two hours in advance I can get FREE upgrades, if there is room available.  This is what happened last month on my flight to Portland.  This is similar to a benefit offered by Delta and United airlines.  Unfortunately, with American Airlines I have to redeem 500 mile upgrade segments  (I earn four 500 mile upgrades after every 10,000 miles flown). With American Airlines, I currently have 8 upgrades which won't even get me a round trip upgrade from the west coast to the east coast.  If I want to fly Alaska I can look online at seat availability to see what the chances are for a free upgrade and I really like flying first class.

Since I don't know what airline I will be flying on the Global Scavenger Hunt I plan to take my airline frequent flyer cards and a list of alliances.

Look at all these Alaska Airline benefits and tell me if you think I should dump American and start earning with Alaska:

Is Delta Airlines the Wave of the Future?

Tomorrow I have a meeting with my friend Steve who I previously mentioned in my July 13, 2012 blog as someone who likes flying Delta.  I am not a Delta fan but Steve likes it for his travels between California and New York.  The reason he likes Delta is he often gets upgraded for FREE.

There have been rumors that Delta Airlines will be going the way of Jet Blue and Southwest Airlines.  With both of these airlines you earn frequent flyer miles based on the price of the ticket versus earning miles based on the distance traveled.  For me, purchasing a $12 ticket on 12-12-12 with Jet Blue isn't going to earn me a lot of miles.  I want to earn miles based on how far I fly so I can buy the cheapest ticket possible.  My $12 ticket between Long Beach and Portland, Oregon earned me 12 award miles with Jet Blue but if I had earned miles based on distance traveled I would have earned 846 miles.  If I am short on miles, in order to earn elite status, I want to do a mileage run (a flight that is taken for the sole purpose of earning airline miles). This would not work if Delta changes its way of awarding mileage.

Last week Delta took a step in what I describe as the wrong direction.  Beginning January 1, 2014, in order to earn elite status with Delta for the 2015 year, travelers will need a combination of qualifying miles and now qualifying dollars spent on tickets. Right now the revenue based mileage (ticket price) is just for status and you can still earn miles for how far you fly but I would not be surprised to see this change in the future.  I can only hope that United and American don't follow Delta's lead.

Tax Time = FREE Southwest Miles

I have just started getting my tax documents in the mail.  Tax time is definitely not my favorite time of year but realizing I can earn airline miles at least softens the blow.  You can earn 1000 Southwest miles by completing your taxes using TurboTax. TurboTax is designed to help you prepare your own taxes.  Last year I received a FREE copy of TurboTax for evaluating their program.  The great thing is TurboTax even has a FREE federal program that qualifies for the 1000 Southwest points. Have a great weekend!!

How to Easily Earn $40

Ebates is having a special deal where you can get a $40 bonus for referring four friends.  I love earning money for Internet shopping.  To learn more about Ebates click here for the July 2, 2012 blog.  For example, today I booked a hotel room for August and I will get a 5% rebate for booking the hotel room online.

The problem was I used to forget to go to Ebates first before making an Internet purchase. What I love about Ebates is there is now a tool bar that pops up whenever a site can earn me cash back.  See the below example for the pop up.  Click here to get information on how to install the toolbar. (Nance, this message is particularly for you).

We Are Going To Travel The World!

I am excited!! Maria and I have been accepted for the Global Scavenger Hunt (GSH).  We leave on April 12th from the West coast and arrive back in the United States on May 4th on the East Coast (of course we don't know where). The winners of the GSH get to return the following year for FREE to try and reclaim the championship. Teams come from all over the world to participate. Twenty percent of the people who are on the GSH have been past participants.  The oldest participant was 74 and the youngest 13.

A packet is going to be mailed out to us with more information so I will try and keep everyone up to date on our travel adventure.

As a side note, while at the travel show I picked up a 5% discount code (TAS130287) for All Nippon Airways (ANA) for travel to Japan or Asia.  This code is good for up to five people.  Tickets must be purchased by July 31, 2013.  Just throwing this out there in case anyone wants to go pick up my favorite Royce chocolate.  ANA is part of the Star Alliance so you can earn miles with United Airlines.

What is Passport Day?

When I was at the travel show this weekend personnel from the Los Angeles Passport Agency had a booth.  On their counter was a flyer that said March 9, 2013 was Passport Day.  I had never heard of Passport Day so I inquired what this meant.

Passport Day is an annual event during which all Passport Agencies across the United States are open on a Saturday, with no appointment necessary.  This is done only one Saturday out of the entire year.  Do you hate the thought of having to take time off work to get a passport, possibly even losing money by not working?  If so, mark March 9, 2013 from 9AM to 3PM on your calendar.

Also, today at 4PM is my interview for the Global Scavenger Hunt.  Wish me luck!

The Los Angeles Travel Show Changes Everything

Remember my December 26, 2012 blog where I was trying to decide between a trip across the United States or a trip to Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal. Well my readers were split on which trip I should take but the final decision is...neither.  After going to the L.A. travel show I have decided on the most amazing trip.  At one of the booths was a company called the "Global Scavenger Hunt."  After hearing all about the trip, and reading all about it online, Maria and I put in our application.

So what all is involved?  We are going to travel to 10 countries over a period of 23 days.  But here's the catch.  I don't know what 10 countries I am going to and I won't know each country until 4 hours before I depart to a country.  This trip has been described as a "blind date with the world."

The Global Scavenger Hunt is a contest where two teams will be given a list of things to do that earn points.  Below are some examples with the answers provided.

Item One: (25 points) Ride a four-legged beast around one of the Seven Wonders of the World (Pyramids) wearing a traditional Arab galabyia and headdress purchased in Khan al-Khalili. (Cairo's Grand Bazaar)
Item Two: (10 points) Find the early morning market that sells so-called "Blue Gold," taste it. (Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo sells Bluefin sushi tuna at dawn)
Item Three: (25 points) Visit the "Temple of Love" and find a nearby soothsayer who uses an unusual friend to assist him and have your fortunes told. (Near the Taj Mahal Toothy Malya uses a 60-year old monkey as his celestial assistant)
Item Four: (25 points) While in the 'City of Waters' learn the local dance from an instructor inside the "World's Largest Shopping Center". (In Kapali Carsi - the Covered Bazaar, you'll find a belly dancing studio...take a class!)
Item Five: (25 points) Locate a place where you can swim with a bull shark. One Teammate must do it! (Answer: Singapore's Underwater World)
Item Six: (15 points) Attend an Orthodox Easter Midnight Mass in Greece. (Visit an Athens cathedral for the once a year ceremony.)
Item Seven: (20 points) Singing "Born to be Wild" in a Ginza-district karaoke bar with at least three new friends. Prove it. (Must go to Tokyo, Japan and take a video.)
Item Eight: (50 points...and a lot of karma points too!) Choose from one of the following four humanitarian organizations and donate a half-day of your time assisting the people of a Tibetan refugee camp. (While in Nepal, doing good and having fun too!)
Item Nine: (25 points) Learn the Cyrillic alphabet over a pint of beer with a new friend in Sofia, Bulgaria. (Okay, it takes two pints!)
Item Ten: (20 points) Play a round at the Dubai's Royal golf course. (Visit Dubai and play some golf at a special course.)
Item Eleven: (25 points) Ride an Icelandic pony across a glacier. (Watch out for volcanoes too!)
Item Twelve: (50 points) Take an elephant safari a spot a Royal Bengal tiger in Rajasthan.

What made my mind up was when I was told that there was the opportunity to do charity work, (for example, read item eight above). Trusting strangers in strange lands is the unofficial motto of the scavenger hunt, and helping strangers in strange lands is the goal of the Great Escape Foundation. The GreatEscape Foundation was created in 2000 as an IRS-approved tax-exempt 501(c)(3) California-based non-profit organization, designed to promote charitable giving and other noble causes associated with the annual The Global Scavenger Hunt™ events.

In 2010-2011 the Great Escape Foundation funded the building of five coed elementary schools in Ecuador, Sri Lanka, Sierra Leone, India and Kenya, along with a secondary girls school Kenya. They are also completing the funding and building of a 2-year school building project in Niger.

Skiing For Less

Deals We Like is a blog I like to follow.  This week Deals We Like had a blog on getting discount ski tickets at Costco.  Recently, my friend Tim went skiing at Heavenly in South Lake Tahoe, California and it cost $105 for the lift ticket. This week I was at the Costco in Portland, Oregon and Costco offered a three days of skiing at Mt. Hood, Oregon for $109.  That is nearly three days for the price of Tim's one day of skiing.  In California, Colorado, Michigan and Oregon, Shell gas stations are offering buy one get one FREE ski ticket at select ski locations with the purchase of 10 gallons of gasoline. Click here for more information.

Costco has great deals on skiing.  Below is the information taken from the Deals We Like blog:

Ski season is in full force and it seems as though this winter will hopefully be better than last in regards to snow on the mountains. While there are many ways to get lift ticket discounts at mountains (lifttopia.com, workingadvantage.com, local gas stations), Costco has some great deals. The great thing about Costco is that you can return the pre-purchased lift ticket if you end up not using it (just make sure to double check with your local Costco).
Keep in mind that each Costco location carries different mountains lift tickets as they typically offer those in the region.
So here are some of the various mountain deals:
  • Hunter Mountain, New York: Two unrestricted lift tickets for $98
  • Park City, Utah: 5 any day lift tickets for $338
  • The Canyons, Utah: 2 pack of 3 out of 7 days for Canyons for $400
  • Alyeska Ski Resort, Alaska:  Two-Day Adult Lift Ticket for $104.99 (order online)
  • Big White Resort, British Columbia: Adult 2-Day Flex Pass for $129.00 (order online)
  • Red Mountain Resort, British Columbia: Two 1-da lift tickets for $89.99 (order online)
  • Mt Hood Meadows Ski Resort, Oregon: Learn to Ski or Snowboard Package – includes, 3 days of lift day passes, 2 hour lessons and equipment rentals (order online)
  • Eldora, Colorado: 3 pack for $119
  • Mount Tremblant, Canada: 2 day for $129.99 or 3 day for $189.99; also the two-pack includes two $10 meal vouchers and the three-pack includes three $10 meal vouchers (order online)
  • Diamond Peak, Tahoe: While I cannot find the prices, you can purchase these discounted lift tickets at these Costco locations
  • Whitefish Mountain, Montanta: 2 any day tickets for $99
Have a Great Weekend!!

Another Bad Day for Toolbars

Yesterday I got an email that the American Airlines toolbar was no longer going to work after today.  Yesterday I got an email that United Airlines is also pulling their toolbar.  These toolbars were the best way to get FREE miles.  Now I am going to really have to work harder.  The United toolbar also expires today.  That leaves the Delta and Hawaiian airlines toolbars so I am keeping my fingers crossed.  If you haven't installed a toolbar yet, what are you waiting for?  See the June 28, 2012 blog to sign up.

American Airlines Ends Their Shopping Toolbar...Bummer

I always loved getting free American Airline miles.  The easiest way is to install a toolbar (See September 21, 2012 blog).  Unfortunately, today I got an email that said the AAdvantage eShopping assistant is being discontinued as of January 10th, 2013.  American Airlines stated that the assistant by AAvantage eShopping did not receive the response they anticipated.  I guess I wasn't doing enough on-line shopping.  Luckily there are other tool bars out there.  Check out the June 28, 2012 blog to install an airline toolbar.

Alaska Airlines Part II

As I mentioned earlier this week I flew Alaska Airlines to Portland.  A few more things I wanted to mention about Alaska Air:  I really like the new Alaska Airlines terminal at LAX.  LAX now has FREE Wi-Fi and the seats in the Alaska Airlines waiting area  have outlets and USB ports at practically every seat.  Just look for the large gate powers signs.  You can also find these signs in their Anchorage, Portland and Seattle gate areas.  No more searching for a seat by the wall hoping there is a free outlet available.

I am a Mac person but if you have Windows 8, Alaska Air released a new travel app, “Deals and Destinations” that alerts fliers to airfare deals from their hometown and to cities where your friends or relatives live.

And finally, Sherri I hope you are reading this, on March 29, Alaska Airlines is starting a new service between San Diego and Boston.  If you fly between March 29 and July 17 you can earn double miles.  Alaska Airlines is also offering a new service between San Diego and Kaua’i and offering double miles between June 7 and August 7, 2013.  I think it's time to plan a trip.
