A Marriage In The Future?

There was a courtship, some relationship cheating, embarrassment after being left at the altar but it looks like the marriage is going forward. You are probably wondering who is getting married after such a rocky road to get to the altar.  It looks like American Airlines and US Airways are going forward with the proposed merger.

US Airways is currently the fifth-biggest US airline, combine that with a merger with number three American and it would push the combined carrier to number one, bypassing United and Delta airlines.

US Airways CEO Doug Parker, is no stranger to failed attempts at major mergers.  In 2006 his hostile bid for then bankrupt Delta faltered after two months as creditors and employees balked.  In 2008, United Airlines walked away from talks with US Airways, leaving Parker at the altar by saying the merger wouldn't provide enough savings and they wanted to explore talks with Continental.

So what does this mean for you the consumer? Hate to tell you its not necessarily good news.  It means less competition and less competition usually means higher prices.  Less competition can also mean the airlines don't have as many incentives in the area of award travel as they don't have to court you away from as many other airlines to get your business.

This marriage is going forward but don't throw the rice just yet.
